The origins of the company go back to the Lever family’s connection with the textile industry in England. Robert Lever immigrated to the USA in the 1880’s, bringing with him a knowledge of vegetable dyes used in the textile industry. He founded a company in partnership with W. H. Burns and successfully grew a fabric dye company. His son, C. Lever, Sr, started C. Lever Co. in 1936 to manufacture Pigments Blue 14, Blue BO tint, and colorants for flares. Based on a successful pyrotechnics display at the 1939 World Fair in NYC, during World War II he was selected to manufacture colorants for flares to be used by the US Navy. After the war, the company entered the paper industry as a supplier of pigments to paper mills all over the USA and Canada.
